Hand Held Metal Detector Provides Security Protection

When traveling by air, entering many government buildings, especially court houses the use of a hand held metal detector is becoming standard procedure. Most of the units are designed in the shape of a wand, providing detection in an area between six and inches long, they guard against unwanted metal being brought into the facility such as knives and other weapons.

Used almost exclusively by security forces, the largest user would be the Transportation Security Administration, charged with the security of all airports in the country. Screeners use a hand held metal detector whenever a person passing through the walk-through the detectors indicates additional scrutiny is necessary. The hand held metal detector is the second step in the process, before a more thorough search is conducted, if the hand held metal detector cannot pinpoint the source of the alarm.

Many police departments also use a hand held metal detector when conducting an arrest, as a first search of a suspect. With the potential of being cut or stuck by hidden materials, using a hand held metal detector to conduct a first search, metal objects can be located before the officer conducts the traditional pat-down. This can also prevent the officer missing a flat metal object that can be used as a weapon.

Provides Unobtrusive Search Of Innocent Parties

There has been discussion that the use of a hand held metal detector may violate a person's rights of unlawful search, but most legal professionals agree that this unobtrusive search is a trade-off for protecting the safety of others. A signal from a hand held metal detector that the person is carrying a metal object, potentially a weapon, is considered legal grounds for a more thorough search to be conducted.

While the hand held metal detector works fine for security screening, due to its limited range it does not perform well as a metal detector for finding metals in the yard or on the beach. Typically, they will have a range of about two to four inches, while some more expensive models may reach up to six inches, a person would have to crawl on the ground to make them effective for ground searches.

There are hand held metal detector units small enough to fit into a persons shirt pocket and some arenas in which the potential for problems has been identified also use them to help protect other patrons. Bars, taverns and sports arenas are more involved in security screening for banned weapons as a matter of safety.
